About the team


The Capex and Property opex team plays a pivotal role within the Financial Control department of Telefónica UK Limited.

The team of 5 are responsible for the monthly accounting of capex (over £700m per annum), IFRS16 and property opex. In addition we provide vital insight to key stakeholders that help the understanding of and influence the company’s cost base.

About the role


This senior role leads a team of four part/ fully qualified accountants.

Specifically responsible for ensuring the accurate accounting of capital expenditure, fixed assets, IFRS16 and property opex. The team manages monthly actuals and comparisons to budget/ forecasts, working closely with other teams in Finance.

Also responsible for accounting for CTIL, our exciting joint venture with Vodafone to build the UK’s best Network).

With real responsibility for the integrity of our accounts as well as associated process and controls, this role offers a fantastic chance to have a real impact on the Telefonica UK business.


Key Responsibilities


  • Manage a team of accountants to ensure and enforce robust and efficient accounting.
  • Line manager responsibilities for 3 accountants within the team and an additional team member reporting within the team.
  • To prepare and explain month end reporting to senior stakeholders within Finance and beyond.
  • Review and challenge the integrity of data and reporting to ensure the integrity of our accounts.
  • Enhance appropriate controls in all area, to ensure accurate and robust reporting while continually improving efficiency.
  • Drive improved reporting from existing tools, to reduce manual work arounds and provide timely, accurate information to key stakeholders.
  • Ensure Budgets and forecasts are pulled together (where appropriate) to agreed timescales.
  • Drive continued efficiencies (through improving processes and simplifying activities) while maintaining performance standards.
  • Be responsible for maintaining compliance to required Sarbanes-Oxley processes and controls.
  • Oversee the relationship with CTIL, understanding monthly transactions and providing accounting support. Develop and maintain relationships with external CTIL accounting team and improve efficiency of processes in place.


Key skills/behaviours/experiences

  • Qualified Accountant.
  • Excellent line management and people engagement skills.
  • Strong technical accounting experience with working knowledge of IFRS16
  • Understanding Property costs / accounting
  • Fixed Asset / Capital Accounting
  • Financial Accounting Rigour – especially provisions
  • Managing outsourced service providers and relationships with external accounting teams to ensure high levels of performance
  • Highly proficient with systems – Oracle GL, Projects and good knowledge of databases
  • Working knowledge of excel.


Key Stakeholders

Internal stakeholders: Primarily with the COO finance team but also other Finance & Strategy directorates.

External stakeholders: Primarily CTIL.
