About the role


Reporting directly into the General Counsel, this role is responsible for all legal matters in relation to digital entertainment content and programming procurement, the Director of Legal  for TV and Content is responsible for the successful leadership and management of the divisional TV and Content legal team at O2.


The Director of Legfal for TV and Content will also be responsible for the efficient and effective execution and delivery of material contracts and matters, including timely and accurate completion of reports to the General Counsel and Executive management.


Key Accountabilities and Deliverables


  • Advise on a broad range of complex commercial legal matters of significant strategic and/or financial value, driving effective execution of major projects, identifying risk, escalating as appropriate, recommending mitigation and implementing solutions, with primary responsibility for legal advice


  • Manage and lead a team of three 


  • Provide Legal advice on all programming and channel carriage agreements (including new media) with key content providers (e.g. Sky, BT) and on Co-production of agreements with all 3 media companies


  • Proactively create and manage contract management, raising upcoming key milestones and providing strategic direction on renewal of deals, and connecting various content deals


  • Develop and drive a clear escalation path for material matters to General Counsel and Executive management, including accurate and articulating reporting on status and execution of projects, changes to agreements and material risk


  • Ensures external benchmarking of our contracts and terms and conditions to maintain competitive advantage


  • Identifies commercial opportunities for Virgin Media and O2, as well as defending the company where appropriate, and identify any risks and opportunities


  • Manages resource to ensure effective prioritisation of resource, providing leadership to ensure path to execution with appropriate terms and mitigation or risk (e.g. use of content, security of supply etc.



Attributes, Competencies, Knowledge and Skills




  • UK qualified lawyer with demonstrable first class technical legal skills, based on extensive understanding of Programming, the industry and the bigger organisational picture, and key issues facing our business.


  •  Strong experience in Carriage, specifically negotiating rights as a broadcast platform to provide content to our end users.


  • Ability to adapt to change and ambiguity in a complex, fast-changing environment, and competent in coping with uncertainty and risk.


  • Financially literate with an understanding of the Company’s key performance indicators


  • Ability to articulate complex matters in a concise and precise manner and to debate issues constructively at all levels within the organisation


  • Excellent drafting skills


  • Capable of leading through change and transformation




  • Versatile in other Commercial contracts from complex programming deals to advertising deals, to technical agreements and an understanding of the regulatory framework governing the consumer area


  • Expert in project management and able to bring people along with them: track record in attracting, developing and retaining team members




Location: Slough/ London - with some remote working
