About the team:

 

The Data Access Team manages the delivery of the internet to customer mobile devices from the radio layer onwards.  It deals with products, such as Policy Control and Rules, Parental Control and Video Optimization and is also be responsible for some elements of Smart Metering within the network.  The test team which comprises of fifteen people, focuses on using representative hardware and systems, working closely with suppliers, to ensure that the requirements are delivered in a reliable and consistent manner that will delight our customers and protect our network.

 

About the role:

 

The role is within the Data Access Test Team, on one or multiple projects within the core Data Access portfolio and will also include Smart Metering. It will be a mixture of test design, tool development, hands on testing with a bias towards performance testing and the analysis of the results. One day you may be writing a Test strategy for a new service, the next you may be in a Faraday cage using a handset to prove the latest revision of our optimizing platform does not break Facebook.  Reporting in to the Data Access Test Manager the candidate will need to be experienced in Data Access platforms as well as testing methodologies both functional and non-functional and have an extremely broad understanding of the technologies underlying the internet.

 

Key responsibilities:

 

  • Performing a risk based analysis of the platform under test for Data Access Platforms, and deciding (with design support) what level of testing (Functional, Regression, Performance, Load, etc) is appropriate.  Designing and scripting appropriate tests and executing these where appropriate in the lifecycle.
  • Working with vendors to ensure the speedy resolution of any defects.
  • Manage and support the acceptance and integration of Software/ Hardware releases through the Smart Metering test platforms. (this may require out of hours working to ensure maximal environmental availability)
  • Encode and execute performance tests that demonstrate the performance of both the Data Access systems and the Enhanced Packet Gateways.  Analyse the results to ensure the Pass/Fail of the tests and analysis the alarm and reporting platforms to ensure that the system under test performed to specified criteria.  Highlight and investigate any change of behaviour in the platforms whilst under test.  Where failures are observed collate the necessary information to allow investigation.
  • Organising performance test exit reviews between Test Team, Customers and Operations to ensure smooth transition of products between test and live environments. Collate and present the results of the load test, for inclusion in the overall Test Exit Report.
  • Be responsible for any prepay charging stubs required for performance testing.  Ensure that they remain current and fit for purpose and develop any new ones that are required.  Ensure that all other Stubs and drivers correctly operate during a load test and highlight when this is not the case.

 

Key Skills:

 

  • Integration and Test experience with at least some working experience of Test Methodologies for mobile telecoms based systems.  This will include a sound working knowledge of mobile network and internet based systems including GSM, GPRS,UMTS 4G,5G,RADIUS, DIAMETER, HTTP, HTTPS, QUIC, XML, WML, SSL, UMC. Understanding of the functionality of Data Access and Packet Core Platforms. i.e. Smart Metering, Child protection PCRF, Packet Gateways and Data Optimization.
  • Proactive ability to interpret and investigate performance reports, to create an action plan so as to help identify, troubleshoot and ultimately fix performance related and other defects
  • Knowledge of virtualized platforms and DevOPs will be beneficial
  • ISEB Foundation qualified and CISCO accreditation desirable.
  • Able to cope with conflicting requirements and work effectively under pressure across multiple projects and customer demands.
  • Knowledge of LINUX/UNIX platforms.  Ability to find and read logs, take traces, start and stop processes etc.
  • The ability to translate design requirements into test designs and test cases and subsequently execute these.
  • Enthusiasm and drive to succeed, an effective team player working across multi-functional teams, focussing on both project delivery and individual growth. Good communication and negotiation skills and able to build sound relationship with internal customers and suppliers through empathy, understanding and action, at both a technical and managerial level.
  • Take personal accountability and ownership for quality and customer experience related to the service platforms
