About the Team:

 

Telefónica UK’s Data Core Design and Test team owns the systems that connect our 5G, 4G, and 3/2G mobile data customers to their web services and content.   We develop, design, integrate, and test the access controls, quota management, URL filtering and web traffic optimisation that enable Telefónica UK to offer the best mobile data services and experience to our customers.  While putting our customers first, we also focus on value for money on the services we deliver for the business.

 

The team’s aim is to ensure these platforms are designed and tested to provide our customers with world class services and user experience at the most effective cost to the business, meeting the business forecasts

 

Responsibilities range from evaluating and selecting supplier platforms, technical solution designs and test, network implementation, through to launch of platforms and services. 

 

Once in service, the team continues defining roadmaps, managing platform capacity and upgrades and providing design support to operational teams.

 

Your Role:

 

The Data Access DAB TDA is responsible for the design of the DAB platform including strategic Content filtering platform, user data performance optimisation and user DNS amongst other functions within the Data Platforms Design team.

 

Working with business stakeholders, other data platform designers, IP and infrastructure design teams, test/support teams and external suppliers generate efficient and accurate solutions that are thoroughly tested and delivered into service giving VMO2 customers the best possible service. 

 

The key focus of this position is to ensure the Data Access filtering and data optimisation infrastructure provides highly reliable, accurate and detailed parental control solutions meeting regulatory requirements along with a high-performance data optimisation solution that is regularly adapted to meet the needs of an evolving network. The role will be strongly focussed on the detail designs needed for upcoming features and capacity forecasts to ensure that the platform can designed, tested and build ahead of demand and maintain and enhance the customer experience. The role will also include working with other teams to integrate relevant security functions within the DAB and supporting the other operations teams as a subject matter expert.

 

Responsibilities:

 

Design

 

  • Lead on the detailed design of platform with the chosen Next Generation DAB platform supplier while continuing to support design of the legacy DAB platform.
  • The scope of the platform currently includes Content filtering, Data optimisation, User Plane DNS, NAT/PAT Firewall, Wap gateway and analytics logging.
  • Responsible for both the High-Level design and Low-level designs in conjunction with the platform suppliers.
  • Responsible for the platform roadmap of new features in conjunction with the platform suppliers.
  • Take the lead on technical relationships with our company’s stakeholders: Operations Support, Security Test, and WLT - also Marketing, Revenue Assurance, and Service Management
  • Work with specific technical primes in Packet Core and PC(R)F teams, so that DAB can interoperate successfully with control and user plane nodes
  • Work with specific technical primes in security area to ensure DAB is designed and implemented to meet relevant security use cases.
  • Responsible as a key stakeholder in all platform supplier’s vendor meetings
  • Be able and willing to learn continuously, to ensure we keep our network at the forefront of technology
  • Responsible for ensuring the design of the DAB deployments aligns to the VMO2 regulatory filtering strategy and the requirements of our network performance and customer experience teams.

 

Network Performance and customer experience

  • Alignment of the performance tuning aspects of the DAB platform with the requirements of the end 2 end performance team and Customer experience targets.
  • Ensure regular performance tuning of the data optimisation function and ensure that the relevant performance tools are in place.

 

Regulatory Content filtering

  • Ensure that the policies and filtering category configuration are aligned with the needs of the Online safety team and the any external regulatory needs.
  • Work with the content categorisation supplier to continually monitor improve categorisation quality.

 

Vendor and Infrastructure Stakeholder Management.

  • In conjunction with the Data access solutions architect work with the platform vendors to ensure smooth and consistent end to end management of the Platform supplier and quality end products first time.
  • Work with the infrastructure team and the platform vendor to ensure hardware requirements of the VNF design are thoroughly understood and that the application onboarding process into telco cloud is a success.
  • Take a full role in the vendor management structure including feed into TRMs and ORMs and regular meetings are held with the vendor to manage the design.

 

Delivery & quality

  • Lead the DAB design activity feeding into the Projects and programmes teams and ensure that all design requirements and pre-requisites and thoroughly understood and that design needs are considered in project planning.
  • Ensure thorough design change management process is in place with the DAB supplier and development and review of quality documentation.

 

Capacity & Platform performance management

  • Ensure that the specific components of the DAB infrastructure capacity are maintained to meet the Network Traffic Forecast, through robust week to week performance and capacity monitoring process and that necessary actions and mitigations are carried out in a timely manner.
  • Ensure all necessary capacity monitoring and KPIs are in place on the relevant Service assurance platform.
  • Assist the Data Access Solutions architect in preparing longer term planning and capacity management.

 

Innovation and Market Awareness

  • Identify opportunities for innovation in the data optimisation and filtering design arena. Assist data access architect in defining future capabilities.

 

Skills & experience:

 

  • At least 7 to 10 years of experience in Mobile Data Network disciplines.
  • Understanding of the mobile data core network and the technologies that surround it.
  • Extensive experience of Mobile Data functionality and technology, including all data core functions and interfaces, control plane and mobile data call flows.
  • Detailed knowledge of mobile data transport technologies and protocols including TCP, UDP and QUIC and the optimisation
  • Awareness of the range of applications, services and devices that customers use in the mobile data network and the impact of the network on their performance.
  • Working Knowledge of the evolving 5G SA networks and standards
  • A solid technical understanding of virtualisation, including cloud native CNF and VNF platform architecture and deployment
  • An understanding of policies and functions as they are deployed in deep packet inspection, content filtering and data optimisation are desirable.
  • Experience with applying proven delivery methodologies
  • Be self-motivated and hard-working, to lead and work within virtual teams, to ensure we deliver the best services
  • Ability to communicate clearly at all levels within the business.
  • Ability to Influence business & operation teams and stakeholders

Additional Information:

 

  • No Direct Reports, but matrix managing may be required.
  • As required, line Manager of a small number of contractors
  • Vendor management is a significant and important skill needed for this role
  • The role will be Slough based, but it is important that the individual is flexible to travel occasionally both within the UK and Internationally.
