Telefonica Research is hiring for a short-term research project focused on Network Architecture Design for 6G.   
 
Telefonica Research is a leading industrial research lab based in Spain (Barcelona and Madrid). At Telefonica Research, we follow an open research model in collaboration with Universities and other research institutions, promoting the dissemination of scientific results both through publications in top-tier peer-reviewed international journals and conferences and technology transfer. Our multi-disciplinary and international team counts several full-time researchers, holding PhD degrees in various disciplines of computer science and electrical engineering. 
 
We are looking for a researcher (close to finishing their PhD or in early stages after the PhD) to join our team of experts who are working on evolving the 5G service-based architecture towards 6G. During this short-term project, which can last up to 6 months, the researcher will be responsible for designing and implementing core network functions that support a global mobile operator network model.
 
Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop 5G core network functions that allow global connectivity.
  • Assist in the development of procedures and protocols for mobility management, session management, and subscriber data management.
  • Conduct experiments and evaluations to assess the performance of the global connectivity scenario.
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in core network and service technologies, standards, and industry trends.
  • Write technical reports and documentation to communicate results to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Analyse and provide technical insights on the impact of emerging technologies and requirements on the core network and services.

 
Qualifications:

  • PhD (or close to completion) in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • Strong understanding of telecommunications and 5G Network Architecture, with a focus on the core network and network services.
  • Strong experience in testbed-driven experimentation, with proven experience with open-source projects (e.g., free5GC, open5GS, Magma Core).
  • Experience with 5G network measurements, data analytics and visualization.
  • Experience with network emulation and testing tools for validating core network and service functionalities.
  • Strong programming skills in languages such as Python and Go.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
